Festival of Trees

For over 20 years, the Canadian Women's Club of Atlanta has submitted an entry to the "International Section" of the Atlanta Festival of Trees.

This event is held annually in December, together with a seasonal parade, to raise funds for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

The festival showcases Christmas Trees and other seasonal decorations which have been designed by both professional decorators and amateurs such as schools and organizations like the CWC.  All items are available for sale by the general public, with the proceeds donated to CHoA.

The theme of the 2006 Festival of Trees is "Celebrate Christmas Past".  It is being held from December 2 to December 10 at the World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta.  Further information is available from the Festival organizers at 404-264-9348, or on the web at http://www.choa.org/festival.

The Canadian Women's Club of Atlanta, together with the CanAm society, RBC Centura Bank and the Canadian Consulate, are proud to once again be participants in this event.

Run for Research (formerly theTerry Fox Run)

In 1980, an unknown young man with an artificial leg set out to run across Canada to raise a million dollars for cancer research. For 143 days he ran 26 miles a day, until the entire country was cheering him on.

After 3,339 miles, cancer claimed the life of the 22 year old, but not before Terry Fox had raised $24 million dollars. This was a dollar for every single person living in Canada at that time. In the 20 years since, tens of millions more dollars have been raised for cancer research throughout worldwide races like the Atlanta Terry Fox Run, that keeps Terry's dream alive.

This young man inspired Rod Stewart to write a song about him; he inspired HBO to make a movie of his life; he inspired the owner of the Four Seasons Hotel to keep his memory alive by hosting annual Terry Fox Runs throughout Canada and the 17 other countries where the hotels are located; and he still inspires millions of Canadians. Let him inspire us!

Members of the Canadian Women's Club of Atlanta have participated in the Atlanta Terry Fox Run where the monies raised benefited The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Healthcare. In 2002, this amounted to approximately $100,000.00 that was pledged by the Four Seasons.

This year, the Four Seasons Hotels (a Canadian-owned enterprise and a major sponsor of the Terry Fox Run), have changed the name of the Atlanta run and pledged proceeds to benefit Grady Health System in their continuing fight against cancer.  In our hearts, though, we dedicate the run to Terry!

Hockey Night with McGill

Each year, the McGill University Alumni Association of Atlanta arranges a block of tickets and "meet and greet" for a hockey game at Philips Arena for Canadian "ex pats" to enjoy.  The game is chosen based on a Canadian team being in town to play the Atlanta Thrashers.

This year, the Toronto Maple Leafs vs Atlanta Thrashers game on December 1, 2005 will be the event.  Deadline for registering is November 4.

Contact H. Allardyce for further information.

Annual Reception

Each year, the Canadian Consul General and the Canadian Women's Club of Atlanta host a reception at the Consul General's official residence.  The party is complimentary for active members of the Club, their spouse/partner, members of the Consular staff, and other invited guests.

This year, the reception was held on Saturday, February 17.  A record number of guests attended and enjoyed a wonderful buffet planned by Maeve Gagnon.  Our thanks to Maeve & her committee:  Susan Breckenridge, Thelma PlutAnne, Margaret Stephen & Bette Walton all their hard work in setting up for the evening.  Special thanks to Brian & Lydia Oak for their warm and generous hospitality.  Mike Sage of Mike Sage Photography very kindly took wonderful pictures of the evening .. to view them, please click here.

30th Anniversary Celebration

2004 was our 30th anniversary year!  In 1974, a group of Canadian women living in Atlanta decided to form a club for fun, friendship and support.  The first Executive meeting was held on Wednesday, February 27, 1974, and the first General Meeting was held on  Thursday, March 21, 1974.  The late Diane Titlow served as our first President, and other Executive members included Joyce Waters and Trottie Miller.  Other members that you’ll recognize who joined soon after are:  Bette Walton, Helen Brickell, Phyllis Gareis , Ruth Kirby, and Adelle Rothbloom.

The annual dues in the early years were $5.00, and our membership rose from less than 20 to peak at over a hundred in the late 80’s to mid 90’s with the Olympics in Atlanta.  According to Bette Walton, Olive Scarfe and Helen Brickell, those first meetings were held at 11am at a  members home with about 15 Canadian ladies in attendance for a pot-luck lunch (including wine), followed by a speaker.   Back then the membership was not as widely spread out over Atlanta.   The “Bonspiel Thaw” was an evening party to which spouses were invited, and was held in late January or early February.  It took place at Trottie Miller’s home and consisted of pot luck hors d’oeuvres and honour system cash bar.  A big project of CWCA at that time was the sponsorship of a female Canadian student at Georgia State for two years.  Monies to cover the in-state scholarship were raised by a garage sale and other activities, and managed by the Admissions Office of Georgia State.

Congratulations to all of our members, and especially the ones who have remained in CWCA over the years to help make it the friendly and welcoming group of women that it is today!

On Sunday afternoon, May 2, 2004, we had a 30th anniversary family pool party at the home of Kelli Adams and Greg Maddock.  Over 70 people attended, and the party was a rousing success.  Among the guests were Joyce Waters, a charter member, as well as  Bette Walton, Helen Brickell, Judy Caldwell, and Susan Zarzour, all past presidents of the Club.

MAY 24 IN ATLANTA (2005)

To celebrate the Canadian May 24 holiday, the club reserved a pavilion at Sweetwater Creek State Conservation Park, Lithia Springs, GA  30122.  Everyone who came had a great time, and their picnics were outstanding.  Lively games of Bocce and Lawn Toss were played, and loads of prizes, both large & small were given out.  We were pleased to welcome 2 visitors from England, Lesley's aunt, Betty Selley, and her uncle, Ian Shellard, who were on holiday in Atlanta enroute to Barrie, Ontario.  To view pictures of this fun event, click here.

JULY 1 CELEBRATION

On Thursday, June 29, 2006 the Canadian Consul General hosted a Family Picnic at Zoo Atlanta.  This was an extremely successful celebration, and much fun was had by all attending.  Click here to see pictures of this event.

Then, on July 1, ATLCanadians hosted an event at the Atlanta Brewing Company.  We have a few pictures here.

INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL FESTIVAL

On Saturday, April 8, 2006 from 12:00 to 5:00 PM, Monica McQuoid and other CWC members hosted the Canadian booth at the International Cultural Festival at McDonough Field, Emory University.  They served Canadian "goodies".  As well, they featured Canadian musical artists, including our own  Jennifer Hanson who performed live.
